Do you prefer a sweet or savory breakfast? Every day I need a savory breakfast. Some people hate eating in the morning but I wake up and I need to consume food. Muffins, pastries, and smoothie bowls are good appetizers, but they aren’t going to do it!
Frou-frou breakfasts don’t sustain me for more than an hour, and a sweet breakfast is not good for your insulin. I’m not diabetic, but apparently insulin issues build up long before you have noticeable symptoms. So if I can do something healthier, why not? Sadly, I also recently learned that coffee is not good for female hormones, so it should be consumed in moderation. Fuck me.
Anyway, what I crave the most in the morning is something hardy with protein, vegetables, fats, grains, and lots of flavor. Ideally, something like a breakfast burrito, or a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. But those things are too heavy to have every day, plus they require space and prep time. So what do I manage to quickly cook every morning from scratch that hits all the notes? Savory oatmeal!
When I used to share this with people, it was received with disgusted expressions. But now my daily breakfast bowl is trendy. I want to share my normal bowl:
Savory Oatmeal
- Hardy serving of oatmeal
- Copious amount of Italian extra virgin olive oil
- Habanero hot sauce
- Chunk of cheese
- Salt over the top
This combination provides me with lots of sustained energy and I feel healthy having it. The capsaicin in the hot sauce stops my morning allergies. The extra virgin olive oil is extremely healthy. The salt is good for electrolytes. The cheese adds some protein. The best brand of cheese I’ve used is Kirkland aged white coastal cheddar from England. It is sharp and tangy in the mild gloop of the oatmeal.
It took me years to get over the monotony of oatmeal. I used to dread eating it and sometimes it still looks like big pot of boogers to me. Varying the taste, texture, and adding color helped turn it into a nice meal. My morning feels incomplete without it now! The only thing I am missing is vegetables, but maybe I will come up with something in the future, as long as it is easy enough for barely-functional me in the morning.
I hope this provides you with an interesting breakfast idea. Stay healthy and please properly fuel yourself.
