Journal 46 LOTR, Lego Packaging, Shoyu Chicken

Hi girls.

Is spring starting in your area? Around me has been still looking like winter. I feel like everything is hesitant to come out.

Guess what? I finished The Lord of the Rings! Yay! I feel like I am ready to be a tour guide for Middle Earth now. It was a pleasurable read. I don’t think it could have been written or published today. It would be accused of every -ism there is. It would probably inspire some new ones! Haha.

I am so excited to rewatch the movies (the extended versions). I didn’t really understand what was going on in the movies the first couple times I saw them. Or the very scary 1978 cartoon. I have a few more thoughts to share, they will be at the bottom of the post, in case you want to avoid spoilers.

I have been playing with a lot of Legos lately. I bought a huge Duplo set to play with with my cat. Feline toys do not entertain her, so we have to invent games to keep her mentally stimulated. My mind was blown: they really do connect with normal Legos. But there was a little notice that came in the set (yes, those are sweet little fang bites):

Switching to using paper packaging instead of plastic? ...Why? The whole company is based on plastic! All the packaging bags in a set are probably less volume of plastic than a single small brick. I don’t think this is a wise idea.

When it comes to health and safety, sometimes you just need an impermeable barrier. Parents feel safe giving their kids factory-sealed Legos. Sometimes, sets sit in storage for a long time in musty, damp, or other bad conditions. But even if the box gets damaged, the pieces will not get dirtied or damaged. Sometimes, sets travel to multiple countries through different collectors before finally being opened. This is all possible to do sanely thanks to the high quality plastic packaging.

Ohhh! I want to share a meal idea. After waiting years and years, we finally made a recipe: shoyu chicken!!! Ahhhh! Oh my goodness. I think we substituted capers for the green onion, but I don’t really remember too much else. It was so delicious that everything became a blur. We modified ours from a basic recipe from Joy of Cooking, but here is a nice local recipe:

The Lord of The Rings Spoiler Zone

Poor Éowyn. Having to watch a succumbing frightened old dotard, while she, capable of riding and fighting, just had to watch her kingdom get brought down. See what she was driven to do? She rode without hope. Except nowadays, seniors don’t get targeted by one or two Wormtongues, they have a million Wormtongues on the internet frightening them.

Then Faramir! He had his own psycho senior, who thought he “still had it” to try and best Sauron. Then Denethor thanklessly threw his last remaining heir without blessing into battle. He was so emotionally hurt that he also gave up hope! If being gravely injured wasn’t enough, Denethor tried to kill his son out of fear and hopelessness, and perhaps the sentiment: If I couldn’t make it, you can’t either.

And just like in real life, it was the Super Senior, Gandalf, who had to knock sense into and overrule the Middle Seniors so they wouldn’t destroy the next generation’s future.
